Monks  on pilgrimage in Tibet carry a food bowl, because most nomadic  families have only enough bowls for family members, and one is  assigned to each family member.  (They rarely wash them, but instead  stick to one bowl.)  A travelling monk would keep his bowl in a case  like this one, made of reeds an yak hair, to keep the bowl safe.
